The Story: Everybody was asking. Where did your old stuff go?
This anthology was built because we owe it to you. This work represents the most complete
collection of the band’s releases ever assembled. It has the new stuff. It has the old stuff, including our
earliest iteration as “Gasoline Gypsy,” when we were a three piece that included our original members
Caleb, Steve, and Jason Peart…all the stuff everyone was wondering “why is it gone?”
Many of our first swings at recording our music are good songs with great bones. They are the first baby steps of our journey. When we listen to them we hear an immaturity, or an innocence, or maybe even a naïveté. We guess that’s typical of beginning music makers. Listening to that early stuff sometimes makes us cringe. We made a lot of mistakes back then. Some lyrics are clumsy. Arrangements were occasionally awkward. Some of the tech is amateurish. Still, it brings wonderful memories rushing back that always make us smile, every time we listen.
So, where’d they go?
Today, we are fighting to break out and make careers in this crazy musical world. Strategically, we made the difficult decision to take many of those early works down. Career making music producers and influencers are busy folks, inundated with new things at every turn. New artists get a fleeting moment to make an impression, if they’re lucky enough to get a listen at all. We wanted to keep our best and most well produced music in the greatest position to find the ears of those people we want to hear our most professional efforts. Lately, we’ve stepped back from touring as much, dedicating this past year’s focus on recording our best music ever. We’ve shored up socials and streaming numbers, invested in distribution, created great content, and let the world know we have something to say! And it’s been working. You’ve been listening. For that, we owe you. But, you let us know you miss those early songs. We hear you. We miss them, too. Some of you were there when we made them. Our newer friends have never heard them. In our hearts, those early songs far more than baby steps that began moving us from then to now. They also remind us of the most significant piece of our history. More than merely our first songs, they sparked life into the heartbeat of the very essence of The Gasoline Gypsies. They are the foundation upon which we have been blessed to build beautiful and magical relationships with the greatest core of music lovers any wet-behind-the-ears, fake-it-‘til-ya-make-it band could ever hope to know and love: The Vagabundos! Whether you’ve been here since those early days of Lynch’s bar gigs in Port Huron, or met us at that smokey little country dive up near The Rifle River in the Mitten, or whether you’ve just
joined the family and are being embraced by those Vagabundos who came before you (if you haven’t met an original Vagabundo yet, you need to!), all of you are what inspires our drive, and creates the friendships that are The Gasoline Gypsies family. For that, we thank you. We hear what this music means to you, and you mean everything to us.
Vagabundos old and new, we want you to understand where our old work went and why. This anthology was created because it allows us to listen to those old tunes, void of worry about their imperfections, absent from the gaze of those in the business who are paid to listen with judgmental ears, instead through our hearts filled with gratitude for all of you who’ve taken the time to be a part of our past, our present, and our future. For that we are grateful for you.
With us, please enjoy “Then and Now.” Listen and remember or learn why we love to head Northbound. Take some time to recall or discover what it means to Unwind. Smile in the warmth of feeling better out there Under the Weather, the first song we ever wrote that became a request at our shows. This anthology plays songs that are our baby pictures. Listen to our later work and hear snapshots of sound that have measured our growth up through today. This is our story shared with our family. Start to finish, this is our history, together. “Then and Now” You are the matriarchs and patriarchs, the bothers and sisters that made our musical family. You are the “special” part of this
special edition. You are what breathes life into The Gasoline Gypsies.
For that we love you.
